Look up a licenseHow cannabis is sold in Vista
Why is every recreational shop in Vista a medical dispensary first?
Because of a 2021 ordinance, effective July 23, 2021: an existing medical permit holder may add adult-use sales in the same physical space (VMC 5.95), and there is no separate adult-use store category.
How many storefronts can there be?
One medical storefront per 10,000 residents (VMC 5.94). The city has reported about ten, and the number moves only when the census or the state population estimate does.
Where are they?
Vista Way carries High Rollers at 1010 E Vista Way and Off The Charts at 1745 Vista Way E. Santa Fe Avenue has Drgreenrx (1406) and The Cake House (1275). Hello Cannabis is on Sycamore Avenue, Honey Oil Collective on Dogwood Way, STIIIZY on La Tortuga Drive and Coastal Cannabis on La Mirada Court.
Who can buy?
Adults 21 and over, and medical patients 18 and over with a physician's recommendation, so the medical-first rule rarely matters at the till and mostly shapes who may open. Expect the sign, the menu and the budtender to look like any other California shop, and expect the receipt to show the 15% state excise tax as its own line. It matters for licensing: run the DCC search for any store you have not used, and look for the state QR certificate within three feet of the entrance. The licensing guide and the California hub cover the checks.
Cannabis in Vista: questions
Can Vista have a store that sells only recreational cannabis?
No. Adult-use sales are allowed only inside a medical dispensary under VMC 5.95, effective July 23, 2021.
Why does Vista have roughly ten stores?
The city permits one medical storefront per 10,000 residents (VMC 5.94), so the number follows the population.
