How cannabis is sold in Alaska
Yes: adults 21 and older can legally buy, carry and grow cannabis in Alaska. Voters approved Ballot Measure 2 in November 2014, possession became legal in February 2015, and the first licensed stores opened in October 2016. The Alcohol and Marijuana Control Office (AMCO) in the Department of Commerce staffs the Marijuana Control Board, which writes the rules and issues licenses for cultivators, manufacturers, testing labs and retail stores.
Under AS 17.38 an adult may carry up to one ounce and keep up to four ounces inside a residence. A household may grow six plants per adult, with no more than three of them mature, and a maximum of twelve per home. A store may sell one ounce of flower, seven grams of concentrate and no more than 5,600 mg of THC in total to one customer per day. Alaska taxes at the farm gate rather than at the register: cultivators pay $50 per ounce of bud, so shelf prices run well above those in Colorado or Washington, and the Anchorage Daily News reported licensed ounces at roughly $180 to $400 in March 2026.
Using cannabis in public is a civil violation with a $100 fine, so consumption belongs on private property with the owner's permission. Since 2019 a retailer can hold an on-site consumption endorsement, and Fairbanks has operated lounges for several years; Anchorage's first edibles cafe was being set up for 2026. Villages can vote to bar sales, which is why most small rural communities have no shop. Federal land, ferries, cruise ships and planes stay off limits because federal law applies there.
Two things are moving now. On September 22, 2026 the Marijuana Control Board advanced rule changes that would loosen advertising limits and remove purchase caps at on-site consumption areas, and it agreed in principle to double the daily purchase limits, with a formal vote still to come. A bill to swap the farm-gate tax for a sales tax was also before lawmakers in 2026. Check AMCO's license search before you buy, and treat this page as general information, not legal advice.
Cannabis in Alaska: questions
Can tourists buy weed in Alaska?
Yes. Anyone 21 or older with a valid government photo ID may buy from a licensed store; no residency or medical card is needed. Purchases are limited to one ounce of flower per day, and you cannot take the product onto a cruise ship, ferry or plane.
How much weed can you have in Alaska?
You may carry up to one ounce in public and keep up to four ounces inside your residence. Going over those amounts is a criminal offense under AS 17.38.
Is there a cannabis tax in Alaska?
The state tax is charged to growers, $50 per ounce of bud and $15 per ounce of trim, not to the customer at checkout. Local governments may add their own sales taxes, and a 2026 bill in the Legislature proposed replacing the excise tax with a sales tax.
Where can you smoke weed in Alaska?
Only on private property with the owner's permission, or in a store that holds an on-site consumption endorsement. Smoking in public carries a $100 civil fine.
