Georgia has no adult-use market. The legal channel is a medical program for people on the Department of Public Health's Medical Cannabis Patient Registry, which requires a physician's certification for one of the listed conditions; minors join through a parent or guardian. For years patients could buy only "low-THC oil" capped at 5% THC. Senate Bill 220, signed by Governor Brian Kemp in May 2026 and in force since July 1, 2026, swapped that cap for a possession limit of 12,000 mg of THC in labeled pharmaceutical containers, renamed the product "medical cannabis" and let patients 21 and older vaporize, including dried flower. Smoking stays illegal, and candy- or cookie-style edibles are not allowed.
Supply comes from six licensed producers: Class 1 licensees Trulieve in Adel and Botanical Sciences in Glennville, plus Class 2 licensees in Macon, Louisville, Dublin and Milledgeville. The Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission's license register lists about two dozen dispensaries under the Trulieve, Botanical Sciences, Fine Fettle, True Bliss and Treevana names, clustered in metro Atlanta and in Macon, Pooler near Savannah, Evans, Columbus and Athens. Georgia was also the first state to let independent retail pharmacies stock state-legal cannabis products: the Board of Pharmacy began taking applications in October 2023, and about 120 pharmacies applied in the first weeks.
The commission says Georgia can recognize another state's patient card for up to 45 days. Anyone without a registry card falls under the criminal code, where possessing an ounce of marijuana or less is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 12 months in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both.
