How it works

How cannabis is sold in Santa Barbara

  1. Council adopts Chapter 9.44 of the municipal code, covering indoor cultivation, manufacturing, distribution, testing, delivery-only retail and storefront retail.

  2. Council limits storefront retailers to three and adopts the application criteria.

  3. According to the city, no applications for additional licences are being taken.

  4. Verdex lists six stores with Santa Barbara addresses, twice the storefront cap.

Why six against three?

The register does not say which listings are storefronts, and some may operate under another authority or deliver only. The city's municipal code, as published, also keeps storefronts 1,000 feet apart, so shops cannot bunch on one block, and 600 feet from schools. On State Street, Beyond / Hello is at 3516 and Farmacy Upper State at 4235. Canopy Club is on North Milpas Street, Coastal on Chapala Street, Santa Barbara Collective on De La Vina Street and The Farmacy at 128 West Mission Street. Verdex gives licence and address for each of the six, with no scores. The city also keeps a commercial cannabis business tax page among its business taxes. What the state itself requires is on the California overview.

Cannabis in Santa Barbara: questions

Can a new Santa Barbara dispensary open?

The city says it is not currently taking applications for additional licences, and the 2018 cap is three storefront retailers. A new store would need the council to reopen the process.

Is delivery treated differently?

Chapter 9.44 lists retailer-delivery-only as its own category beside retailer-storefront, so the three-storefront limit does not by itself cover delivery businesses.
