How it works

How cannabis is sold in Seaside

Why so many stores for 32,366 people?

The 2020 census counted 32,366 residents, and Verdex lists five stores, one per roughly 6,500. In December 2017 the council voted to permit six dispensaries rather than the three first contemplated, Monterey County Now reported, and The Reef on Fremont Boulevard was the third to open in 2018.

Is the cap still growing?

No. A November 2024 headline in the same paper said Seaside, which allowed more dispensaries than any other local city, was cutting back. The city code's language limits each type of dispensary to three valid agreements.

Which shops share Broadway Avenue?

CannaCruz is at 680, Halfpipe at 840 Suite B4 and Tolt River Cultivation Cooperative at 575. Higher Level is on Canyon Del Rey Boulevard and The Reef on Fremont Boulevard. Three of the five listings share Broadway. Higher Level's earlier medical operator, Higher Level of Care, occupied vacant office space on Canyon Del Rey just north of Embassy Suites, Monterey County Now reported.

What does a permit involve?

Each dispensary needs a conditional use permit and a development or operating agreement with the city, and none may sit within 600 feet of a school for kindergarten to grade 12, according to the city code. General California rules are on the state overview.

Cannabis in Seaside: questions

Does Seaside allow adult-use and medical stores?

The city code refers to dispensaries of each type, medical and adult-use, with agreements limited to three of each type. Whether a given store sells both is up to its permits.

Is Seaside the same as Monterey?

No. Seaside and Monterey are separate cities with their own council decisions. Monterey's council chose its first storefronts in May 2024, according to Monterey County Now.
