Numbers behind the reading
OLCC's September 2026 record lists Malheur County, Nyssa, Vale and Jordan Valley as prohibiting retail, and Ontario is not on it. That makes Ontario the county's only place to buy. Portland Monthly put sales at about $100 million in 2023 in a town of 11,600, more than 90 percent of it from Idaho, and $3,125 per county resident, the highest in Oregon. The city's 3 percent tax brought in $2.9 million, much of it earmarked for pension debt.
Verdex lists 14 shops. Downtown has The Bud House on NE 2nd and High Supply on NE 3rd, with Burnt River Farms on NW Washington and Cookies on NW 11th. Ontario keeps Mountain time, an hour ahead of most of Oregon, so check closing times. See the Oregon hub for who may buy, how much and at what tax. The dedicated Ontario and Idaho guide covers the border risk.
- County monopoly
- Only Ontario allows retail in Malheur County
- Idaho share
- More than 90 percent, per shop owners' estimates
- Time zone
- Mountain time, unlike most of Oregon
