How it works

How cannabis is sold in Newport

Six licensed shops share a small town, and Newport's code decides how close they can get to each other and to child care.

  • Check the spacing. Chapter 4.20 of the city code requires 1,000 feet between dispensaries and from other cannabis facilities, and 1,000 feet from child care. Newport News-Times reported that the council proposed 500 feet from child care under conditions.
  • Place each address. The paper's count of six in city limits puts two on the Bayfront, one in Nye Beach, one near 15th Street and Highway 101, one downtown and one near Samaritan Pacific hospital. Oregon Coast Dispensary at 861 A NW Beach Drive fits Nye Beach and Newport Cannabis at 157 NW 15th Street fits the highway corner.
  • Look at Coast Highway. The Medication Station is at 454 SW Coast Highway, TSM 3 at 657 and Oregon Bud Company at 1155. The first two are only a couple of hundred numbers apart.
  • Question the far north address. Seaweed Reef is at 5417 North Coast Highway, well beyond the numbers above.

What the tax rule says

Oregon lets a city add up to 3 percent to the state's 17 percent on recreational sales. Whether Newport charges the full 3 is not something the sources we opened settled. Lincoln County has its own marijuana tax ordinance, number 488. For the state side of the question, use the Oregon hub page.

Cannabis in Newport: questions

Why are two Newport shops so close on Coast Highway?

We do not know. The 1,000-foot rule and the licence dates would tell, and a couple of hundred street numbers on a highway can mean several hundred feet.

Is the count really six?

The News-Times counted six licensed shops within city limits. The register also lists six Newport addresses, including one far up North Coast Highway.
