How it works

How cannabis is sold in Albany

Does Albany add its own tax?

Yes, three percent of the retail price, under chapter 3.06 of the city code, on top of the state's 17 percent. On a $50 order that is $1.50 for the city. The council first voted for 10 percent in 2014, with Mayor Sharon Konopa breaking a 3-3 tie, the Albany Democrat-Herald reported, before the state capped local taxes at 3.

How close to homes can a shop be?

When the council wrote its first limits in 2014, it borrowed the medical-dispensary test: more than 300 feet from land zoned residential, mixed use, office professional or neighbourhood commercial, unless the site is in an industrial zone. Ordinance 5833 carries that 300-foot wording. Read the code as it stands today before you assume an address qualifies.

Which streets hold the shops?

Pacific Boulevard SE has three of the eight we show: Beaver Bowls at 1434, Emerald Triangle at 838 and Green Room at 820. On 9th Avenue SE, Canna Bros. is at 815 and Homegrown at 921. The rest are spread out: Cloud 9 on Manor Street NE, Going Green on South Commercial Way and Oregon Cannabis Co. on Santiam Highway.

What does the register count?

Nine licences carry an Albany address, and the register types all nine as dispensaries. Buying limits for the whole state are set out under Oregon.

Cannabis in Albany: questions

Is there a reservation or tribal store near Albany?

Nothing in our register or in the sources we opened points to one. Every listing here is an OLCC retail licence, and all nine are ordinary dispensaries.

Is the 10 percent tax still in force?

No. The 10 percent figure was a 2014 council vote taken before the state set its 3 percent local ceiling. The current city code taxes marijuana retail sales at three percent.
