The rules

Key rules in Canada

Plain-language summary. The regulator is Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).

  • Minimum age

18 in Alberta, 21 in Quebec, 19 in all other provinces and territories.

  • Possession

    30 g of dried cannabis or equivalent in public (1 g dried = 5 g fresh, 15 g edible solids, 70 g non-solid products, 570 g beverages, 0.25 g concentrates or 1 seed). Some provinces cap home storage, e.g. 150 g per residence in Quebec and 1,000 g per household in B.C.

  • Home grow

Up to 4 plants per residence under federal law. Prohibited in Quebec. Manitoba passed Bill 34 in June 2024 and home growing became legal there on May 1, 2025 (19+, up to 4 plants per household, grown indoors; gov.mb.ca).

  • Public use

Set provincially: generally allowed where tobacco smoking is in Ontario and B.C. (with exceptions); smoking and vaping banned in all public spaces in Quebec; no public consumption in New Brunswick; private dwellings only in PEI; restricted in Alberta and Nova Scotia; not in vehicles.

  • Edibles and extracts

Max 10 mg THC per edible package; extracts max 10 mg per unit and 1,000 mg per package; topicals max 1,000 mg per package. Quebec bans edibles in the form of candy, desserts or chocolate.

  • Buying online

Only from provincially run or authorized retailers, delivered within that province.

  • Travel

Taking cannabis into or out of Canada is illegal, with penalties of up to 14 years in prison.

How it works

How cannabis is sold in York

Is York a town?

No. It is the old City of York, merged into Toronto in 1998, and the addresses on this page run along Weston Road, Dundas Street West, Eglinton Avenue West and Scarlett Road. Verdex lists 17 stores under the label.

Whose rules apply here?

Toronto's. Council voted to allow private stores in December 2018, according to the CBC, so anything on this page falls under that decision and Ontario's licensing, covered under Ontario.

Where is the densest stretch?

Weston Road. Budside (2191) and Cannabis Hut (2175) are next door to each other, and Canvas Cannabis is at 1285. To the south-west, Budders (3466) and Canna Cabana (3406) face each other on Dundas Street West, and Above The Clouds is on Scarlett Road. On Eglinton West, Eagle I and Hi Class cover the western stretch.

Why might a store appear under Toronto as well?

Because York is a district, not a municipality. Trust the street address, not the label, when you plan a trip, and match the store name against the AGCO register. With this many licences in one city, an address that looks unfamiliar deserves a look at the regulator's map. Delivery is legal only from a store's own staff.

Cannabis in York: questions

Does York have its own cannabis rules?

No. It has been part of Toronto since 1998, so Toronto's decision to allow stores and Ontario's licensing apply.

Which York stores share a block?

Budside (2191 Weston Rd) and Cannabis Hut (2175 Weston Rd) are neighbours on the Verdex list.
