The rules

Key rules in Canada

Plain-language summary. The regulator is Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).

  • Minimum age

18 in Alberta, 21 in Quebec, 19 in all other provinces and territories.

  • Possession

    30 g of dried cannabis or equivalent in public (1 g dried = 5 g fresh, 15 g edible solids, 70 g non-solid products, 570 g beverages, 0.25 g concentrates or 1 seed). Some provinces cap home storage, e.g. 150 g per residence in Quebec and 1,000 g per household in B.C.

  • Home grow

Up to 4 plants per residence under federal law. Prohibited in Quebec. Manitoba passed Bill 34 in June 2024 and home growing became legal there on May 1, 2025 (19+, up to 4 plants per household, grown indoors; gov.mb.ca).

  • Public use

Set provincially: generally allowed where tobacco smoking is in Ontario and B.C. (with exceptions); smoking and vaping banned in all public spaces in Quebec; no public consumption in New Brunswick; private dwellings only in PEI; restricted in Alberta and Nova Scotia; not in vehicles.

  • Edibles and extracts

Max 10 mg THC per edible package; extracts max 10 mg per unit and 1,000 mg per package; topicals max 1,000 mg per package. Quebec bans edibles in the form of candy, desserts or chocolate.

  • Buying online

Only from provincially run or authorized retailers, delivered within that province.

  • Travel

Taking cannabis into or out of Canada is illegal, with penalties of up to 14 years in prison.

How it works

How cannabis is sold in Sarnia

Can I drive to Michigan with what I bought?

No, and Sarnia is where this mistake happens, because the Blue Water Bridge is minutes from the Murphy Road stores. Michigan sells cannabis too, but a border is federal on both sides. Bringing cannabis across carries up to 14 years in prison under Canada's Cannabis Act, and US officers treat it as a federal matter whatever Michigan allows.

Where are the stores?

Murphy Road, near the highway, is the retail belt: Sessions Cannabis Sarnia at 600, J.J's Joint at 914 and Highlife Bluewater at 940. London Road adds Canna Cabana and Discounted Cannabis. Homegrown Cannabis on Christina Street North is the downtown option.

Why are there three Discounted Cannabis pages?

One chain holds three Sarnia licences: London Road, George Street and Confederation Street. Verdex lists each address on its own because each store is authorized separately.

What about the drive home?

Novice and young drivers face a zero-tolerance THC rule in Ontario, according to the provincial government, and a store sale can run up to 30 g, the same as the public carrying limit. Keep it sealed in the boot. The driving law guide compares the rules, and the retail basics live under Ontario.

Cannabis in Sarnia: questions

Can a visitor from Port Huron buy in Sarnia?

Yes, with valid ID and at 19 or older, but the purchase has to be used or left on the Ontario side.

Is Sarnia a good place to compare chains?

Somewhat: Discounted Cannabis has three addresses, Canna Cabana one on London Road and Highlife one on Murphy Road, so the same names can be priced across town.
