The rules

Key rules in Canada

Plain-language summary. The regulator is Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).

  • Minimum age

18 in Alberta, 21 in Quebec, 19 in all other provinces and territories.

  • Possession

    30 g of dried cannabis or equivalent in public (1 g dried = 5 g fresh, 15 g edible solids, 70 g non-solid products, 570 g beverages, 0.25 g concentrates or 1 seed). Some provinces cap home storage, e.g. 150 g per residence in Quebec and 1,000 g per household in B.C.

  • Home grow

Up to 4 plants per residence under federal law. Prohibited in Quebec. Manitoba passed Bill 34 in June 2024 and home growing became legal there on May 1, 2025 (19+, up to 4 plants per household, grown indoors; gov.mb.ca).

  • Public use

Set provincially: generally allowed where tobacco smoking is in Ontario and B.C. (with exceptions); smoking and vaping banned in all public spaces in Quebec; no public consumption in New Brunswick; private dwellings only in PEI; restricted in Alberta and Nova Scotia; not in vehicles.

  • Edibles and extracts

Max 10 mg THC per edible package; extracts max 10 mg per unit and 1,000 mg per package; topicals max 1,000 mg per package. Quebec bans edibles in the form of candy, desserts or chocolate.

  • Buying online

Only from provincially run or authorized retailers, delivered within that province.

  • Travel

Taking cannabis into or out of Canada is illegal, with penalties of up to 14 years in prison.

How cannabis is sold in Ajax

One Ajax listing covers Units 12, 13 and 14 at 75 Bayly Street W, so in this town the unit number is part of the licence check.

What to verify before you go

  • Unit and street. 4K Cannabis spans three units on Bayly Street W. Match the whole address to the AGCO register, not just the street.
  • Same name, two licences. Canna Cabana is at 170 Kingston Road E and another on Ravenscroft Road; One Plant is on Kingston Road W and Westney Road S.
  • The seal. According to the AGCO, an authorized store shows its authorization and the provincial store seal. If a Kingston Road shopfront has neither, see the Red List.
  • Delivery claims. Ontario stores may deliver; ask which licence the delivering store trades under.

Two roads carry the town

Highway 2, known as Kingston Road, is the main strip: Canna Cabana at 170 Kingston Road E, Holland Daze at 65 and One Plant at 20 Kingston Road W. Harwood Avenue is the second, with Cannaverse at the south end and Green World at 1901 Harwood N.

Ajax council voted unanimously to allow stores on January 14, 2019, eight days before the province's opt-out deadline, according to Durham Radio News. The Durham College Chronicle counted eight Ajax stores against 34 in neighbouring Oshawa in AGCO data in early 2024. Verdex now lists 13, so the town has been catching up. The OCS versus private stores guide compares options, and the Ontario page covers the province.
