How it works

How cannabis is sold in British Columbia

British Columbia combines a government retailer with a large private sector. BC Cannabis Stores, run by the BC Liquor Distribution Branch, sells online and through 35 stores, while the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (LCRB) licenses private retailers, 503 of which were listed as open in its map data in September 2026. Legal stores may ship non-medical cannabis only to customers inside B.C.

You must be 19 to enter a store or to buy, use, possess or grow cannabis. Adults can carry 30 grams in public, buy 30 grams per transaction, keep up to 1,000 grams per household at home and grow four plants. Legal products carry a green B.C. excise stamp, and licensed stores display a government Licensed Cannabis Retailer decal.

Smoking and vaping are generally allowed where tobacco smoking is, but not at playgrounds, sports fields, skate parks or pools, in most parks, on or near school property, inside public buildings, or within six metres of doorways, air intakes, bus stops and transit shelters. Landlords and strata corporations can restrict smoking and growing. The province warns that buying from illicit sellers can bring fines of up to $5,000 or jail time, and it lists the signs of illegal online stores, from missing age checks to cross-Canada shipping.

Cannabis in British Columbia: questions
