Key rules in Canada

Plain-language summary. The regulator is Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC).

  • Minimum age

18 in Alberta, 21 in Quebec, 19 in all other provinces and territories.

  • Possession

    30 g of dried cannabis or equivalent in public (1 g dried = 5 g fresh, 15 g edible solids, 70 g non-solid products, 570 g beverages, 0.25 g concentrates or 1 seed). Some provinces cap home storage, e.g. 150 g per residence in Quebec and 1,000 g per household in B.C.

  • Home grow

Up to 4 plants per residence under federal law. Prohibited in Quebec. Manitoba passed Bill 34 in June 2024 and home growing became legal there on May 1, 2025 (19+, up to 4 plants per household, grown indoors; gov.mb.ca).

  • Public use

Set provincially: generally allowed where tobacco smoking is in Ontario and B.C. (with exceptions); smoking and vaping banned in all public spaces in Quebec; no public consumption in New Brunswick; private dwellings only in PEI; restricted in Alberta and Nova Scotia; not in vehicles.

  • Edibles and extracts

Max 10 mg THC per edible package; extracts max 10 mg per unit and 1,000 mg per package; topicals max 1,000 mg per package. Quebec bans edibles in the form of candy, desserts or chocolate.

  • Buying online

Only from provincially run or authorized retailers, delivered within that province.

  • Travel

Taking cannabis into or out of Canada is illegal, with penalties of up to 14 years in prison.

How it works

How cannabis is sold in Alberta

Alberta relies entirely on private retail and has the lowest legal age in Canada: 18. Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) licenses stores, sets wholesale prices and distributes product, but it does not sell to consumers. It ran the AlbertaCannabis.org online store until March 8, 2022, when it left online retail and allowed licensed retailers with a physical store to sell online and deliver.

AGLC says there is no cap on the number of retail licences, and its public FAQ counts more than 750 retail locations. Stores may open between 9 a.m. and 2 a.m., though municipalities can shorten those hours, and no one under 18 may enter. Retailers endorsed for online sales must show their licence numbers, premises addresses and a link to AGLC's licensee search on their homepage. Deliveries must come from the retailer's own trained staff or a common carrier such as Canada Post, not food-delivery apps, and each order is capped at 30 grams.

Adults can carry 30 grams in public and grow up to four plants per residence. Consumption is allowed in private homes and where municipalities permit it, but not in vehicles, anywhere tobacco use is restricted, where children are likely to be present, or on school or hospital grounds. CannabisSense, AGLC's education site, points residents of Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer and Grande Prairie to their local rules.

Cannabis in Alberta: questions
