The rules

Key rules in Canada

Plain-language summary. The regulator is Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).

  • Minimum age

18 in Alberta, 21 in Quebec, 19 in all other provinces and territories.

  • Possession

    30 g of dried cannabis or equivalent in public (1 g dried = 5 g fresh, 15 g edible solids, 70 g non-solid products, 570 g beverages, 0.25 g concentrates or 1 seed). Some provinces cap home storage, e.g. 150 g per residence in Quebec and 1,000 g per household in B.C.

  • Home grow

Up to 4 plants per residence under federal law. Prohibited in Quebec. Manitoba passed Bill 34 in June 2024 and home growing became legal there on May 1, 2025 (19+, up to 4 plants per household, grown indoors; gov.mb.ca).

  • Public use

Set provincially: generally allowed where tobacco smoking is in Ontario and B.C. (with exceptions); smoking and vaping banned in all public spaces in Quebec; no public consumption in New Brunswick; private dwellings only in PEI; restricted in Alberta and Nova Scotia; not in vehicles.

  • Edibles and extracts

Max 10 mg THC per edible package; extracts max 10 mg per unit and 1,000 mg per package; topicals max 1,000 mg per package. Quebec bans edibles in the form of candy, desserts or chocolate.

  • Buying online

Only from provincially run or authorized retailers, delivered within that province.

  • Travel

Taking cannabis into or out of Canada is illegal, with penalties of up to 14 years in prison.

How it works

How cannabis is sold in Orleans

Governing council
City of Ottawa, which opted in during late 2018
Paired-shop chains
Hunny Pot Cannabis, One Plant
Just across the river
Gatineau, 21+ and SQDC only

Two chains, two shops each

Orléans is one of the few places where chain strategy shows on a map. Hunny Pot Cannabis has a Tenth Line Rd shop and a second at 1615 Orleans Blvd, which Verdex keeps on its own page. One Plant does the same: One Plant on Innes Rd and the One Plant Cannabis Superstore on Portobello Boulevard. Each has its own AGCO authorization and staff.

The St. Joseph corridor and the edges

The old main street, St. Joseph Boulevard, carries Dime N Dash at 2369 and GreenBank Cannabis at 2208. Tenth Line adds Highties Cannabis, and Inspired Cannabis Co is far north on Jeanne d'Arc Boulevard.

The river matters less than the border on the map suggests, but it changes the rules. A 19-year-old can buy in Orléans and cannot legally buy in Gatineau. Province-wide basics live on the Ontario region page.

Cannabis in Orleans: questions

Does Orléans have its own cannabis bylaw?

No. Orléans is an Ottawa neighbourhood, so the city decision to allow private stores (taken at the end of 2018) covers every shop here.

Are the two Hunny Pot shops the same business?

Same brand, separate licences. Each address is authorized on its own, so hours, stock and prices can differ.
