The rules

Key rules in Canada

Plain-language summary. The regulator is Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).

  • Minimum age

18 in Alberta, 21 in Quebec, 19 in all other provinces and territories.

  • Possession

    30 g of dried cannabis or equivalent in public (1 g dried = 5 g fresh, 15 g edible solids, 70 g non-solid products, 570 g beverages, 0.25 g concentrates or 1 seed). Some provinces cap home storage, e.g. 150 g per residence in Quebec and 1,000 g per household in B.C.

  • Home grow

Up to 4 plants per residence under federal law. Prohibited in Quebec. Manitoba passed Bill 34 in June 2024 and home growing became legal there on May 1, 2025 (19+, up to 4 plants per household, grown indoors; gov.mb.ca).

  • Public use

Set provincially: generally allowed where tobacco smoking is in Ontario and B.C. (with exceptions); smoking and vaping banned in all public spaces in Quebec; no public consumption in New Brunswick; private dwellings only in PEI; restricted in Alberta and Nova Scotia; not in vehicles.

  • Edibles and extracts

Max 10 mg THC per edible package; extracts max 10 mg per unit and 1,000 mg per package; topicals max 1,000 mg per package. Quebec bans edibles in the form of candy, desserts or chocolate.

  • Buying online

Only from provincially run or authorized retailers, delivered within that province.

  • Travel

Taking cannabis into or out of Canada is illegal, with penalties of up to 14 years in prison.

How it works

How cannabis is sold in Stoney Creek

Stoney Creek has no cannabis rules of its own, and the reason is a merger.

Does Stoney Creek set its own cannabis rules?

No. It has been part of the City of Hamilton since amalgamation in 2001, and Hamilton, with 569,353 residents, opted in when council voted, according to CBC Hamilton. Stoney Creek shoppers use the same provincial rules as the rest of the city.

Where do Stoney Creek's stores gather?

Highway 8 carries five: Canna Cabana at 94 Unit F2, Discounted Cannabis at 141 Unit 2, Sessions Cannabis at 369 Unit B2, Cabbage Brothers at 483 Unit 3 and Elevated Minds at 570 Unit 2. Neku Cannabis is on King St E and Sessions has a second store on Stone Church Rd E.

Is Winona part of Stoney Creek?

The register puts One Plant at 1370 S Service Rd, inside the Winona Crossing Shopping Centre, under a Stoney Creek address, so Verdex counts it here.

Why do the names repeat?

Sessions Cannabis holds two licences here, at 369 Highway 8 and 1786 Stone Church Rd E. Treat them as separate stores. The AGCO has allowed a 7 a.m. opening since 1 May 2026, but Verdex records no store-specific hours. The provincial basics are collected under Ontario.

Cannabis in Stoney Creek: questions

Are Hamilton's other wards different?

Not for licensing. The opt-in was a citywide vote, and stores are licensed by the AGCO, not by ward.

Which store is furthest from Highway 8?

On the register, Sessions on Stone Church Rd E and One Plant in Winona are the two that are not on Highway 8 or King Street.
