The rules

Key rules in Canada

Plain-language summary. The regulator is Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).

  • Minimum age

18 in Alberta, 21 in Quebec, 19 in all other provinces and territories.

  • Possession

    30 g of dried cannabis or equivalent in public (1 g dried = 5 g fresh, 15 g edible solids, 70 g non-solid products, 570 g beverages, 0.25 g concentrates or 1 seed). Some provinces cap home storage, e.g. 150 g per residence in Quebec and 1,000 g per household in B.C.

  • Home grow

Up to 4 plants per residence under federal law. Prohibited in Quebec. Manitoba passed Bill 34 in June 2024 and home growing became legal there on May 1, 2025 (19+, up to 4 plants per household, grown indoors; gov.mb.ca).

  • Public use

Set provincially: generally allowed where tobacco smoking is in Ontario and B.C. (with exceptions); smoking and vaping banned in all public spaces in Quebec; no public consumption in New Brunswick; private dwellings only in PEI; restricted in Alberta and Nova Scotia; not in vehicles.

  • Edibles and extracts

Max 10 mg THC per edible package; extracts max 10 mg per unit and 1,000 mg per package; topicals max 1,000 mg per package. Quebec bans edibles in the form of candy, desserts or chocolate.

  • Buying online

Only from provincially run or authorized retailers, delivered within that province.

  • Travel

Taking cannabis into or out of Canada is illegal, with penalties of up to 14 years in prison.

How it works

How cannabis is sold in Wasaga Beach

Wasaga Beach said no in 2019 and yes a year later.

Was Wasaga Beach closed to cannabis stores?

Yes. CTV Barrie reported that the town opted out in 2019 to watch how the province's rollout went for a year. A survey launched in August 2020 drew 285 respondents, 74.6 percent of whom backed opting in, according to town staff, and council then notified the province that it would allow stores.

Does the town regulate where stores can go?

It published a Cannabis Retail Policy as By-law 2021-06. Read that text if you are asking about siting; Verdex does not summarise it. Three stores sit on Mosley Street at 1288, 1295 and 1890, Cannabis Cove is at 113 Main St, Groovy's at 676 River Rd E, Star Buds at 30 45th St S and Sessions at 3 Market Lane.

Can I use it on the beach?

Check the town's Smoking/Vaping on Municipal Property By-law, No. 2020-17, which the town says covers smoking or vaporizing tobacco or cannabis on town-owned land. The town counted 24,862 residents in 2021, and under the AGCO's 1 May 2026 change its stores can open from 7 a.m.

Are there consumption lounges?

None is listed. The register shows retail only, and the Ontario hub has the province's use rules.
