Key rules in Canada

Plain-language summary. The regulator is Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).

  • Minimum age

18 in Alberta, 21 in Quebec, 19 in all other provinces and territories.

  • Possession

    30 g of dried cannabis or equivalent in public (1 g dried = 5 g fresh, 15 g edible solids, 70 g non-solid products, 570 g beverages, 0.25 g concentrates or 1 seed). Some provinces cap home storage, e.g. 150 g per residence in Quebec and 1,000 g per household in B.C.

  • Home grow

Up to 4 plants per residence under federal law. Prohibited in Quebec. Manitoba passed Bill 34 in June 2024 and home growing became legal there on May 1, 2025 (19+, up to 4 plants per household, grown indoors; gov.mb.ca).

  • Public use

Set provincially: generally allowed where tobacco smoking is in Ontario and B.C. (with exceptions); smoking and vaping banned in all public spaces in Quebec; no public consumption in New Brunswick; private dwellings only in PEI; restricted in Alberta and Nova Scotia; not in vehicles.

  • Edibles and extracts

Max 10 mg THC per edible package; extracts max 10 mg per unit and 1,000 mg per package; topicals max 1,000 mg per package. Quebec bans edibles in the form of candy, desserts or chocolate.

  • Buying online

Only from provincially run or authorized retailers, delivered within that province.

  • Travel

Taking cannabis into or out of Canada is illegal, with penalties of up to 14 years in prison.

How it works

How cannabis is sold in Brampton

A common mistake in Brampton: assuming it followed neighbouring Mississauga and banned pot shops. It didn't. On January 21, 2019, council voted 8–3 to allow private stores, so Brampton had legal retail more than four years before its Peel Region neighbour.

How Brampton compares with the rest of Peel

Peel Region's two big cities took opposite paths in 2019, which shaped where local buyers shopped for years.

Stores near schools: what the rules say

Provincial rules set the only hard buffer: the AGCO will not authorize a store within 150 metres of a school. Brampton council has pushed for stricter distances from schools, but the city can only submit comments during the AGCO's 15-day public notice for each application; the AGCO decides. If you see a store close to a school, it may be measuring from a property line you don't expect, or it may be worth reporting.

Who to call about an unlicensed shop

The City of Brampton points residents to Peel Regional Police for illegal cannabis sales and drug-impaired driving, and to 3-1-1 for general questions. Unlicensed online "dispensaries" that advertise same-day delivery across the GTA are the usual trap; a legal Ontario store delivers only with its own employees, only to a residence, and only between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m. Cross-check any seller on the Verdex Red List of flagged sellers.

Before your first visit

Store hours vary from shop to shop. Some Brampton stores open late morning, some close early; check before you drive, since Brampton is spread out and walk-in options differ by neighbourhood. Whatever the posted hours, but none may open before 9 a.m. or close after 11 p.m.

Bring government photo ID; staff must check anyone who appears under 25. Expect 13% HST on top of the federal excise duty already built into the shelf price. Read what to bring and ask on a first dispensary visit, compare the province-wide picture on Ontario cannabis rules and ratings, and use the cannabis use check if you're unsure how cannabis fits with work, driving or medication.
