Sarnia sits at the foot of the Blue Water Bridge, and Port Huron, Michigan, sells legal cannabis too. Federal law on both sides still bars taking any of it across the border, in any amount and in either direction.
On the Canadian side Verdex lists 15 AGCO-authorized stores. Council said yes to private shops in December 2018 with only two councillors opposed, and a city survey found 87.8 per cent of respondents in favour. The first store, Bluewater Joint, opened in January 2021. You must be 19 to buy, and ID is checked at the door.

See the Red ListLondon Road, Murphy Road and downtown Sarnia
Two roads carry most of the list. On London Road are Canna Cabana at number 1355 and Discounted Cannabis at 1380, and on Murphy Road are Highlife Bluewater at 940, J.J's Joint Cannabis at 914 and Sessions Cannabis at 600. Discounted Cannabis has three Sarnia addresses, including George Street and Confederation Street, and Homegrown Cannabis is downtown on Christina Street North.
- Cross-border: read what both border agencies say before you carry so much as a pre-roll to Michigan.
- Buying limits: up to 30 grams of dried cannabis or its equivalent per purchase, and shops must check ID at entry.
- Consistency: because the Ontario Cannabis Store is the only wholesaler, the products are the same across town; price and service are the variables.
Stores come and go, so confirm a shop on the AGCO map before a special trip. Sarnia is one of several Ontario border cities on Verdex; Windsor across from Detroit has its own store list.
Questions about this list
Can I take cannabis from Sarnia into Michigan?
No. Cannabis remains federally illegal in the United States, and Canadian law also bars export. Bringing it across the Blue Water Bridge in any amount risks seizure, fines and being barred from entering the U.S.
When did Sarnia get its first legal cannabis store?
Bluewater Joint, a family-owned shop, opened in January 2021, according to the Sarnia Journal. Council had voted in December 2018 to allow private stores.
