How it works

How cannabis is sold in Trinidad

A town of 8,329 people should not need 14 dispensaries, and Trinidad in Las Animas County has them, so the risk here is choosing a name that has already closed or changed hands.

  • Check the licence, not the sign. The state Marijuana Enforcement Division register is the only list that shows whether a licence is live. Use our licence-check guide.
  • Match the address. Three shops share the Santa Fe Trail (118, 1423 and 3140) and two share Main Street (401 West and 911 East). A wrong number puts you at a competitor.
  • Expect corporate names. Nuvue Pharma LLC on Van Buren Street and Faragosi Farms are licence-file names; the counter may trade under something else.
  • Ask about chain ownership. The store at 3140 Santa Fe Trail is Native Roots; the chain is covered in our Native Roots guide.

Fewer shops than the headline number

A 2018 report cited by Wikipedia counted 23 licensed dispensaries in the town, about one per 352 residents, with $44 million in annual sales and $4.4 million in tax for the town. Verdex lists 14. The register does not say which of the nine missing shops closed and which merged, so treat 23 as history. The old highway holds Faragosi Farms, Clearance Cannabis CO. and Native Roots Trinidad; the rest are singles on North Commercial Street (Magnolia Road), Arizona Avenue and Van Buren Street.

The southbound mistake

Trinidad sits just north of Raton Pass on I-25, about 21 miles from New Mexico, and shops here long courted drivers heading north. New Mexico began its own licensed sales on April 1, 2022, so the trip is rarely needed. Taking the bag south is still a federal offence, even between two legal states. The 2020 census counted 8,329, in the seat of Las Animas County.

Is the 2018 count of 23 shops still right?

No. Verdex lists 14 today, and the register does not explain the drop.
