How cannabis is sold in Cortez

Why drive to Cortez at all?

Montezuma County's Ordinance 3-2014 bans stores in unincorporated areas, with exceptions only inside Cortez, Dolores and Mancos. Cortez is the biggest of the three and the register lists seven stores here.

Who wrote the city's rules?

The council adopted them on 28 August 2014 by a 5-2 vote, according to the Durango Herald. The 18-page ordinance allowed storefronts, growing and testing, kept dispensaries from making edibles, and a moratorium ran to 31 December 2014. Mayor Karen Sheek told the paper the city had already put controls on medical dispensaries with few problems.

Where do the seven stores sit?

East Main Street carries three: Mountain Annie's at 439, Do Cortez at 1013 and Livwell at 1819. Chronic Therapy is on South Broadway, Nuvue Pharma on Patton Street and Tha Corp on North Lebanon Road. The Doobie Sisters has no address in our data.

Can you take it to Mesa Verde?

No. Mesa Verde National Park lies southeast of town and Canyons of the Ancients National Monument nearby, and federal land follows federal law. National Park Service rule 36 CFR 2.35(b)(2) bars controlled substances in parks whatever Colorado allows. Buy nothing you plan to carry across a park boundary. Colorado's own rules are in the state buying guide.

Cannabis in Cortez: questions

Is Dolores or Mancos closer for some visitors?

Did Cortez ever ban stores?

It ran a moratorium on retail marijuana that stayed in force through 31 December 2014, then licensed storefronts under the August 2014 ordinance.
