Look up a licenseHow cannabis is sold in Aspen
Aspen has five licensed stores on the state register, all inside a few blocks, and each one holds two licences: the state's and the city's. That gives you two things to check, and most people check neither.
- Look for the city licence as well. Aspen issues its own marijuana store licences, and its 2025 renewal form asks for the state licence number next to the city one. The renewal fee for a retail store is $1,000.
- Match the unit. Rootsrx is licensed at 400 East Hyman Avenue, Unit A102. The Green Joint is at 720 East Durant Avenue, Unit E-3. Silverpeak holds lower-level units LL2 and LL3 at 520 East Cooper Avenue.
- Use the number, not the sign. The state lists Green Dragon under 402R-00209 and Native Roots Aspen under 402R-00379, and those can be searched in the state's lookup.
Who decides on a sixth store?
Applicants go before Aspen's local licensing hearing, which the city says meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 9 a.m. The Aspen Times reported that recreational retailers were first capped at the number of existing medical outlets until 1 January 2015, and the Aspen Daily News later reported council dropping a proposed limit to let market forces decide. Nothing on the city's licensing page states a current cap.
What is on the mall and what is not
Green Dragon (409 East Hyman) and Rootsrx are on Hyman Avenue, Native Roots is at 308 South Hunter Street. The ski slopes above town are national forest, where federal law still applies. Colorado's own limits are set out in our buying guide.
Cannabis in Aspen: questions
Do I need a Pitkin County licence check as well?
Not for a shop inside the city. The five stores on the state register carry Aspen street addresses, so the city licence is the local one. Basalt and Snowmass Village are separate towns with their own councils.
How do I confirm a store is licensed?
Take the 402R number from the shop's window or website and search it in the Marijuana Enforcement Division's licence lookup, then compare the premises address, unit included.
