Alberta is the only province where an 18-year-old can walk into a cannabis store. Every store is privately owned and licensed by Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC), which sets no cap on licences and counts more than 750 retail locations. Stores may open between 9 a.m. and 2 a.m., though a city can set shorter hours.

Verdex lists 779 stores. In Calgary, Bud Bar Crowfoot and RARE Cannabis Co. on Richmond Road SW score highest. In Edmonton, Select Cannabis Co. on 118 Avenue NW and the eight-shop Crown Cannabis chain, here its Ritchie store, lead. A single order is limited to 30 grams of dried cannabis or its equivalent.

Online orders, delivery and city bylaws

AGLC stopped selling online on March 8, 2022 and handed that business to licensed retailers with a physical store. A retailer's website must be endorsed by AGLC and show its licence numbers, premises address and a link to AGLC's licensee search on the homepage. Delivery must come from the retailer's own trained staff or a common carrier such as Canada Post, not a food-delivery app, and staff check government ID from anyone who looks under 25.

  • Where they cluster: Calgary 200 and Edmonton 185 of our listings, then Grande Prairie (21), Lethbridge (20), Sherwood Park (17), St. Albert (11) and Medicine Hat (11).
  • Consuming: the provincial rule bans smoking anywhere tobacco is banned, near playgrounds, sports fields and pools, and in any vehicle. Calgary goes further and allows consumption on private property only.
  • Independent versus chain: Alberta's chains sit beside owner-run shops such as FivePoint Cannabis in Bridgeland, which doubles as a gallery for local glass. Compare hours and delivery zones, since stock comes through the same AGLC wholesale system.

Questions about this list

What is the legal age to buy cannabis in Alberta?

18, the lowest in Canada. People under 18 may not enter a cannabis store, even with an adult. Quebec's age is 21 and most other provinces use 19.

Can I order cannabis online in Alberta?

Yes, from a licensed retailer with a physical store whose website AGLC has endorsed. AGLC itself stopped selling online on March 8, 2022. The site must display licence numbers and a link to AGLC's licensee search.

Can I smoke cannabis on the street in Calgary?

No. Calgary allows cannabis consumption on private property only, in any form, with an exception for medical cannabis where provincial and municipal rules allow it. Edmonton and other municipalities set their own bylaws.

Buying in Canada

  • Minimum age

18 in Alberta, 21 in Quebec, 19 in all other provinces and territories.

  • Possession

    30 g of dried cannabis or equivalent in public (1 g dried = 5 g fresh, 15 g edible solids, 70 g non-solid products, 570 g beverages, 0.25 g concentrates or 1 seed). Some provinces cap home storage, e.g. 150 g per residence in Quebec and 1,000 g per household in B.C.

  • Home grow

Up to 4 plants per residence under federal law. Prohibited in Quebec. Manitoba passed Bill 34 in June 2024 and home growing became legal there on May 1, 2025 (19+, up to 4 plants per household, grown indoors; gov.mb.ca).

  • Public use

Set provincially: generally allowed where tobacco smoking is in Ontario and B.C. (with exceptions); smoking and vaping banned in all public spaces in Quebec; no public consumption in New Brunswick; private dwellings only in PEI; restricted in Alberta and Nova Scotia; not in vehicles.
