Michigan's Sault Ste. Marie is a bridge away, and cannabis is legal there too, but CBC reported that you still cannot take it across the border. On the Canadian side the city council opted in ahead of the province's January 2019 deadline while asking the AGCO to keep them off downtown Queen Street, and it also sought a 150-metre setback from parks, community centres and treatment centres, on top of the provincial 150 metres from schools.

The province sets the rules, so those wishes are requests. Verdex lists 15 authorized stores, and none of the eight addresses shown first is on Queen Street. Adults must be 19 to buy.

Great Northern Road, Trunk Road and the Second Line

The list follows the roads that carry the city's retail traffic. On Great Northern Road are Cannabis Jack's at 518 and Happy Life at 41; on Trunk Road are Cannabis Jacks at 149 and a Highlife branch at 625. Second Line has Due North Cannabis Co. at 710 East and Highlife at 612 West, and other Due North branches sit on Pine Street and Churchill Boulevard. Due North has three Sault rows, and Cannabis Jack's is spelled two ways for two addresses, so match the street number.

  • Smoking: the city bans smoking in its parks, CBC reported when council took its 2019 decisions.
  • Hours: Ontario's window of 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. applies here too, the AGCO says, and shops may keep shorter hours.
  • Distance to Michigan: the International Bridge is a short drive from the shops, but see the border cannabis guide before you cross with anything.
  • Northern Ontario comparison: the nearest large lists are Sudbury and Thunder Bay.

Questions about this list

Can I bring cannabis from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario into Michigan?

No. Michigan allows it locally, but federal law prohibits carrying cannabis across the border in either direction, according to CBC's reporting on the Sault crossing.

Does Sault Ste. Marie restrict where cannabis stores can go?

Council asked the AGCO to keep stores out of downtown Queen Street and to keep 150 metres from parks and community centres, but the AGCO's own mandatory buffer is 150 metres from schools.
