Four of the five municipalities that touch Aurora opted out of private cannabis retail in 2018 and 2019: Newmarket, East Gwillimbury, King and Richmond Hill. Only Whitchurch-Stouffville to the east opted in, according to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario's list. Aurora opted in, and Verdex lists 13 AGCO-authorized stores.

The purchase limit is 30 grams, for adults 19 and older. The stores cluster on Yonge Street, at 15114, 15543 and 15570 Yonge, and on Wellington Street East, with others on First Commerce Drive, Hollidge Boulevard and Allaura Boulevard. All are register entries without scores yet, including Ashario and Jane's Cannabis Shop.

What the ring means when you choose

Because four neighbours have no stores of their own, Aurora's shops are the nearest option for people in those towns, which is worth remembering when you pick a time to visit.

  • Yonge Street corridor: Ashario (15114 Yonge), CannaEra (15543 Yonge) and Nature's Haze (15570 Yonge) are on the same road.
  • Wellington Street East: Havok Smoke Cannabis & Accessories at number 38 and Jane's Cannabis Shop at number 160.
  • Side streets: Fika Local Cannabis (First Commerce Dr), Malibu Road (Hollidge Blvd) and Maple Leaf Cannabis (Allaura Blvd) are off the main roads.

A town can comment on a store application, but the AGCO decides, and Ontario Regulation 468/18 limits it to public health and safety, protecting youth and preventing illicit activity. Every store buys from the Ontario Cannabis Store, so prices and stock overlap, and the meaningful differences are hours, loyalty terms and delivery. An unlicensed shop can still borrow a real store's look, so check the address on the AGCO map, as the licence-check guide describes. See the Ontario hub for the provincial rules.
