How cannabis is sold in Taos

Why is there no dispensary on the Plaza?

The Town of Taos code, chapter 5.24, keeps every cannabis business at least 300 feet from the Historic Taos Plaza, from any private residence and from schools and day-care centres. Separate establishments must also be more than 300 feet apart, though businesses may share one property.

Where do the shops actually line up?

Along Paseo del Pueblo Sur, the highway through the south side of town: Compassionate Distributors Incorporated at 338, Breezy Bear Nm LLC - Taos Retail at 723, the two Elkhorn Retail suites at 925 and 1033, Green World Taos INC at 1034 and Accendo INC - Paseo Del Pueblo Sur Retail at 1128. Verdex lists 17 in all for a town of about 6,500 people (2020 census). Bighorn Ventures- Paseo Del Pueblo Norte Consumption is north, at 536 Paseo del Pueblo Norte, and Elevation 6969 Llc/ Retail Bendix St Unit E is tucked behind on Bendix Street.

Can I consume on site?

Sometimes. The register tags Bighorn as retail with consumption, and Taos News has covered the town's continuing debate over lounges and dispensary-cafes. Ask the shop what the licence allows that day, and read our lounge guide for the wider picture.

What about the Pueblo and the ski valley?

Taos Pueblo is sovereign land, so the town's ordinance does not reach it; do not assume a shop or a smoking rule there without asking. Taos News reported a first dispensary planned in Taos Ski Valley at 110 Emma Road, so the mountain has its own story now. Rules that apply everywhere in the state are collected in the New Mexico hub.

Cannabis in Taos: questions

Do the Taos rules apply at Taos Pueblo or the ski valley?

No. The town ordinance covers the Town of Taos only. Pueblo land is tribal, and the ski valley is a separate municipality with its own approvals.

Is a 300-foot gap between shops enough to keep Taos from filling up?

It limits clusters, not the total: 17 shops along one highway is possible because a 300-foot gap is only a couple of blocks.
