Why does Albuquerque have so many dispensaries?

Because New Mexico did not cap licenses. When adult-use sales began on April 1, 2022, the state let any qualified applicant open a store, and Albuquerque drew the largest share. The result is 352 licensed locations in Verdex's listing, more than Los Angeles, with dense clusters along Central Avenue, near the University of New Mexico and in Nob Hill. Prices have dropped as a result, and discount flower is common.

Competition also means churn. Stores change names, merge into small chains or close within months, and a location listed on a map app may no longer hold a license. Brands that grow their own flower sit next to resellers stocking the same products from wholesalers, so it pays to ask where a strain was grown and to check the lab results on the label. New Mexico requires testing for potency and contaminants before sale.

How the excise tax is rising every July

New Mexico wrote a yearly step-up into its cannabis law. The rate was 12% until mid-2025 and climbs one point each July 1 until it reaches 18% in 2030, according to the Cannabis Control Division and NMSA 7-42-3.

PeriodCannabis excise
Before July 1, 202512%
July 2025 to June 202613%
July 2026 to June 2027 (now)14%
July 2027 to June 202815%
From July 1, 203018%

Gross receipts tax is charged on top, at the Albuquerque city rate. Enrolled medical patients do not pay the excise tax.

Can you smoke in public or at the Sunport?

No for both. The Cannabis Regulation Act bans use in public places, and the Albuquerque International Sunport follows federal rules at security and on flights. Licensed consumption areas, attached to some dispensaries, are the legal place to use cannabis away from home. Cars are off limits, even for passengers.

Checking a store in a crowded market

With hundreds of storefronts, some close quickly and some lose their license. Check the name on the CCD license lookup, and see our Red List for sellers we have flagged. Our New Mexico hub covers statewide rules and the first-visit guide covers ID and payment.
