How cannabis is sold in Ruidoso

A weekend visitor driving up from El Paso or Las Cruces reaches Ruidoso with a cabin key and a Friday evening, and the cannabis question is usually one of logistics. Verdex lists 29 dispensaries here for a village of roughly 7,800 people (2020 census), most of them strung along Sudderth Drive.

Who decides where the shops go

Ruidoso adopted Ordinance 2021-05 to zone cannabis establishments before sales began. At a commission meeting reported by KOB, village leaders learned they could not block recreational sales but could control locations, a point Rep. Andrea Romero, who helped write the 2021 law, stressed to them. That is why the map looks the way it does: a village this small ended up with a licence for roughly every 270 residents, and the pressure is on price and menu, not on access.
