The number on the shelf in Seattle is not the number you pay. Washington folds its 37% cannabis excise into the displayed price at many stores, then adds sales tax at checkout, and the gap surprises visitors from Oregon or Colorado.
Why is cannabis in Seattle so expensive?
Because two taxes stack. The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board regulates stores, and the Department of Revenue collects a 37% excise on each retail sale plus regular sales tax. In Seattle that sales tax rose to 10.55% on January 1, 2026, after the city and King County each added 0.1%.
| Line item | Rate | Note |
|---|---|---|
| State cannabis excise | 37% | Often built into the shelf price |
| Washington state sales tax | 6.5% | Part of the combined rate |
| Local sales tax (Seattle, King County, transit) | 4.05% | Combined rate 10.55% since 2026-01-01 |
| Medical patients in the state database | Sales tax exempt | Excise still applies |
Which Seattle stores has Verdex reviewed?
Six of Seattle's 41 licensed stores have full profiles so far. Uncle Ike's runs several locations across the city; Dockside Cannabis and Have a Heart are also multi-store operators; American Mary, Ruckus Recreational and A Greener Today round out the set. The other 35 stores show license data only, so do not read their absence as a warning. When comparing, look at the out-the-door price, not the shelf tag: some Seattle stores show prices with the excise included and others add it later, and the difference on an eighth can be several dollars.
Can I get it delivered or use it in a lounge?
No to both. Washington law does not permit retail cannabis delivery, so you order online and pick up in person with ID. There are no licensed consumption lounges in Seattle; a 2026 bill in Olympia (HB 1932) proposed on-site consumption, but no Seattle lounge was licensed as of our check. Using cannabis in view of the public can bring a civil fine.
Rules for visitors
Any valid government photo ID or passport works. Ferries are state property and follow no-use rules, and Sea-Tac security runs on federal law. Read our first-visit guide and the Washington hub for possession rules.
