How is the 20% cannabis tax in Boston split?

Why are Boston stores spread across neighborhoods?

Because city zoning long required adult-use shops to sit at least half a mile apart. The rule, meant to prevent clustering, left Boston short of the roughly 50 shops that state law expects the city to allow, and planners have pushed to repeal it. The practical effect for buyers: stores are scattered from East Boston to Jamaica Plain and Allston rather than grouped in one district. Berkshire Roots in East Boston is close to Logan, Seed serves Jamaica Plain, and Mayflower in Allston sits near the student neighborhoods.

Can you consume cannabis anywhere in public in Boston?

No. Massachusetts bans consumption in public places, and Boston Common and other city parks are included. The Commission's social consumption regulations took effect on January 2, 2026, creating supplemental, hospitality and event licenses, but a venue can only open where the municipality has opted in. Check the city's cannabis hub before assuming a lounge is legal. For delivery, Zyp Run is one of the licensed operators with a full Verdex profile.

Before you buy

Bring a government photo ID; out-of-state licenses and passports are accepted. Many stores still run cash or debit only. Leaving Massachusetts with cannabis is illegal under federal law, including trips to New Hampshire. Compare stores on the Massachusetts hub. A licensed Massachusetts store will show its Cannabis Control Commission license number on request and hand you products in child-resistant, labeled packaging with a batch number and test results. If a shop cannot do those things, walk out. Driving after use is treated like drunk driving, and an open package in the passenger area can bring a citation, so keep purchases sealed in the trunk on the ride home.

Cannabis in Boston: questions

How much cannabis can I buy in Boston in one day?

Up to 1 ounce of flower or 5 grams of concentrate, per Massachusetts rules. Edibles count toward limits by THC content, and stores track it at the register.

Are there cannabis lounges in Boston?

State social consumption rules took effect on January 2, 2026, but a lounge can only be licensed where the municipality has opted in. Check Boston's cannabis hub for the city's current status before visiting any venue that claims to allow on-site use.

Can I take cannabis through Logan Airport?

No. Massport prohibits cannabis on airport property, and federal law applies to flights. Leave any purchases behind before heading to Logan.

Why do Boston dispensaries charge 20% tax?

The rate combines 6.25% state sales tax, a 10.75% state marijuana excise and Boston's 3% local option tax. Medical patients buying at medical counters are exempt.

Is cannabis delivery legal in Boston?

Yes. Massachusetts licenses delivery operators and couriers, and Verdex lists four delivering to Boston. The driver checks ID at the door.
