How it works

How cannabis is sold in Newton

Retailer ceiling: Eight in total under the city ordinance
Spacing: Half a mile between retailers
Floor area: 5,000 square feet at most

The Washington Street pair

Garden Remedies, Inc. at 697 Washington Street in Newtonville was the city's first adult-use store. Ascend Mass, LLC at 1089 Washington Street in West Newton Square, opened in December 2021 as the third; a Newton land-use document puts the two 0.9 miles apart and Ascend at 4,973 square feet.

Elliot Street, Beacon Street and the delivery pair

Cypress Tree Management, Inc. is at 24-26 Elliot Street and The Green Lady Dispensary II, Inc. at 740 Beacon Street. Delivery is by Blue Sky Organics LLC (16 Maguire Court) and Rolling Releaf LLC (69 Adams Street). Newton's rules come from its Registered Marijuana Use Ordinance, and the state page has the rest.

The cap of eight and the half-mile spacing would matter less if Question 8 passes on 3 November: it would end licensed adult-use retail from 1 January 2028, with medical sales continuing.
