How it works

How cannabis is sold in Lowell

A UMass Lowell student scanning the register sees seven Lowell records against a city ordinance that allows five retail stores.

  1. Start with the cap.
Lowell's City Council limited retail to five in May 2018, and the city says it holds host agreements with five stores and no longer takes retail applications.
  2. Match the address.
Lowell Cannabis Company is at 1201 Westford Street, Mayflower Medicinals, Inc. at 450 Chelmsford Street, Pure Lowell, Inc. at 683 Rogers Street, Reverie 73 Lowell, LLC at 1148 Bridge Street, Patriot Care Corp at 70 Industrial Avenue East and Advanced Cultivators, LLC at 100 Phoenix Avenue.
  3. Treat delivery separately.
Boston Bud Runners LLC at 70 Wilbur Street is the one delivery licence on the register.

Why seven records fit under a cap of five

The five-store limit applies to retail. The register also carries medical operations and can carry a licence that is held but not trading, and it does not mark which is which. To find the five that sell to adults, ask each shop or check the Cannabis Control Commission listing.

There has been talk of raising the ordinance cap, according to city agendas, but I found no adopted change. See the state page for possession limits.

Cannabis in Lowell: questions

How many cannabis stores does Lowell allow?

Five retail establishments under the ordinance the City Council adopted in May 2018, and the city says all five host agreements are signed.

Why does Verdex list more than five in Lowell?

The register includes medical and other licence types, and a delivery licence, so its count is higher than the retail cap.
