Buffalo dispensaries: 30 licensed cannabis stores

A 2 On Your Side analysis found 17 Erie County towns and villages had opted out of cannabis shops and consumption sites, so the county map is patchy, and Buffalo itself is one of the places that said yes. Verdex lists 30 licensed stores, including Buffalo Cannabis Connect at 904 Elmwood Avenue in Elmwood Village and 82-J LLC on Hertle Avenue. Adults 21 and older can buy. No store here has a Verdex score yet, and several are microbusinesses with narrower menus than a full retailer, so the licence code is worth a glance before you go.

Microbusinesses, suburbs and licence prefixes

Read the licence number. Several entries in our top eight start with OCM-MICR, the microbusiness type: 716Sticky at 356 Hopkins Street, Buffalo Cannabis Company at 501 Amherst Street and Canna-house Micro at 98 Rhode Island Street. A microbusiness may grow, process and sell its own cannabis, so menus may be narrower than a regular retailer's. OCM-RETL is the regular adult-use retail licence, and CAURD is the conditional retail licence for people with past cannabis convictions.

  • Beyond the city line: some Buffalo-labelled addresses, such as Harlem Road and McKinley Parkway, may lie in neighbouring towns, where the town or village decides whether to allow retail.
  • Streets: Elmwood Avenue, Amherst Street, Hertle Avenue, Virginia Street and Rhode Island Street are the city addresses in the top group.
  • Tax: 13% at retail, made up of 9% state and 4% local, with ordinary sales tax not applied.

If a storefront sells cannabis without a posted OCM verification sticker, treat it as unlicensed; our guide to smoke shops shows the checks. Statewide rules are on the New York hub.
