Maine flips the usual rule: a town has to vote to allow adult-use stores, and many have not. Stores sit where local voters or councils said yes, from Portland and Bangor to Oxford and Waterville. Adults 21 and older may buy up to 2.5 ounces per sale, with no more than 10 grams of concentrate, and the sales tax on adult-use cannabis rose from 10% to 14% on January 1, 2026, according to Maine Revenue Services.

Verdex lists 185 stores from the Office of Cannabis Policy register, whose licence numbers begin AMS, such as 45 North Cannabis Company in Turner (AMS1303) and All Kind Bodega on Congress Street in Portland (AMS331). Register entries carry no ratings yet.

Opt-in towns, delivery and 2026 politics

Portland has 27 of our listings, South Portland 12, Bangor 9, Lewiston 8 and Auburn 7, and towns such as Oxford, Waterville and Thomaston appear too. Because each municipality sets its own licence caps and fees, a town next door may have no store at all. Delivery is different: stores may run a limited delivery service and curbside pickup after checking ID, and towns cannot prohibit it.

  • Home grow: six mature and 12 immature plants and unlimited seedlings, though towns may set lower caps, not below three mature plants.
  • Use: only in a private residence or on private property with the owner's permission. Nobody may use cannabis in a vehicle on a public road.
  • Politics: a citizen initiative to end the adult-use market did not file signatures by the February 2, 2026 deadline, so the earliest it could reach voters is November 2027.

The Office of Cannabis Policy also runs the medical program, served by dispensaries and registered caregivers, and keeps a recall and advisory list worth reading before you buy from a caregiver or store you do not know. See our note on a state butane-residue advisory on a medical concentrate, and the licence-check guide for the lookup.
