A New Jersey dispensary exists only where its town said yes. The Cannabis Regulatory Commission says municipalities had until August 21, 2021 to ban cannabis businesses, that those that did nothing automatically permitted them, and that a town which banned can opt back in at any time. Adults 21 and older, residents or visitors, may buy up to 1 ounce of flower, 4 grams of concentrate or 1,000 mg of edibles per transaction.

Verdex lists 320 stores, mostly as CRC register entries without ratings. URB’N Dispensary on South Street in Newark serves adult-use and medical customers and holds a consumption-area endorsement. Licensed retailers hold Class 5 numbers beginning with RE, which the CRC posts on its permitted-businesses page.

Jersey City, the shore and the lounges

Jersey City has 26 of our listings, Atlantic City 17 (among them AC Leef on North Albany Avenue), Somerset 12, and Plainfield, Newark, Elizabeth and Camden five or six each. Towns can also levy a local transfer tax of up to 2% on retail sales, so two shops a few miles apart can price differently.

  • Tax: 6.625% state sales tax at the register. A Social Equity Excise Fee of $2.50 an ounce for 2026 is charged to cultivators on wholesale transfers, according to the Division of Taxation, and is built into shelf prices.
  • Lounges: the CRC approved the first four consumption-area endorsements in July 2025. An endorsed dispensary also needs its own municipal approval, and food and drink sales are barred.
  • Delivery: Class 6 delivery services and some retailers deliver.
  • Limits: possession up to 6 ounces; giving up to 1 ounce to another adult is allowed if nothing is paid.

Some dispensaries serve medical patients only, so check the CRC's dispensary finder before you drive. Home growing is not legal, and carrying cannabis across a state line, including to New York or Pennsylvania, is illegal. Our New Jersey guide answers the ID and price questions first-time buyers ask, and the lounges guide shows where consumption spaces operate.

Questions about this list

Can tourists buy cannabis in New Jersey?

Yes. Anyone 21 or older with a government-issued photo ID can buy at a licensed dispensary, whether a New Jersey resident or a visitor. Stores may not copy your ID or keep a purchase record beyond the transaction.

Why are there no dispensaries in my New Jersey town?

Municipalities could ban cannabis businesses, and many did. The Cannabis Regulatory Commission says towns that banned can opt in later, and a town that allows cannabis can still limit which licence classes it welcomes.

Are there cannabis lounges in New Jersey?

Yes, a few. Consumption areas are attached to licensed dispensaries with a CRC endorsement and separate municipal approval. Patrons must be 21 with photo ID, tobacco is banned and the areas may not sell food or drink.
