On November 3, 2026 Massachusetts voters decide Question 8, which would end licensed adult-use retail sales from January 1, 2028 while keeping medical marijuana. Nothing changes at the counter before then. The Cannabis Control Commission said on September 5 that adult-use sales had passed $10 billion since the first stores opened in November 2018.

Adults 21 and older with a government ID may buy up to 2 ounces of flower a day, a limit doubled in April 2026. Verdex lists 454 stores, including BOUTIQ in Maverick Square, East Boston, steps from the Blue Line, and Firebrand Cannabis, a social-equity, woman-owned shop facing South Station.

Where the stores are, and what Question 8 would change

Boston has 45 of our listings, Worcester 15, Cambridge 13, and Pittsfield and Brockton 11 each, with Northampton at 10. A yes vote would end licensed retail sales and the related tax rules on January 1, 2028, leave adult possession of up to one ounce without a criminal penalty and keep the medical program, according to CommonWealth Beacon's ballot guide; NORML says home cultivation would end too. A UMass/WCVB poll found 55% opposed to repeal and 33% in favour; read the Secretary of the Commonwealth's voter guide before you vote.

  • Tax: 10.75% excise, 6.25% sales tax and up to 3% local tax on adult-use purchases; registered medical patients are exempt.
  • Licence check: retailers hold MR numbers, such as MR283011 for BOUTIQ, and the Commission publishes its licence list as open data.
  • Deals: a September 25, 2026 Commission bulletin says stores still may not advertise discounts on online menus, so expect promotions at the counter or by opt-in email.
  • Lounges: rules have applied since January 2, 2026, but no social consumption licence had been issued by September.

Each city or town sets its own conditions through host community agreements, so store density varies between Greater Boston and the Berkshires. Home delivery has its own listing on our Massachusetts delivery page. The rules and limits guide covers the 2-ounce change in detail.

Questions about this list

Will Massachusetts dispensaries close if Question 8 passes?

Not immediately. Question 8 would end licensed adult-use retail sales on January 1, 2028, according to CommonWealth Beacon's ballot guide, and medical marijuana would continue. Stores stay open as normal until then, whatever the November 3 result.

How much cannabis can I buy in Massachusetts in one day?

Up to 2 ounces of flower, or 10 grams of active THC in concentrates or 1,000 mg in edibles, per transaction and per day, under Cannabis Control Commission Administrative Order No. 6, effective April 19, 2026.

Can I use cannabis inside a Massachusetts dispensary?

No. The Commission approved social consumption rules in December 2025 and they took effect on January 2, 2026, but no lounge licence had been issued by September 2026.
