Ohio capped its dispensaries at 400 in March 2026. Senate Bill 56, signed December 19, 2025 and in force since March 20, 2026, rewrote parts of the voter-approved Issue 2: it also moved intoxicating hemp off gas-station shelves, since anything above 0.4 mg total THC per container now counts as marijuana. The Division of Cannabis Control listed 228 dispensaries with dual-use certificates on September 14, 2026.

The daily cap is 2.5 ounces of flower or up to 15,000 mg of THC in other products, for buyers 21 and older. Verdex lists 171 entries, many of them chain pages such as Zen Leaf, with a store in Cincinnati's Hartwell on Vine Street, Verilife on Ridge Avenue and Columbia Care in Dayton's Oregon District.

What SB 56 changed at the counter

Columbus has 21 of our listings, Cincinnati 17, Dayton 7 and Cleveland 6, with single stores in towns from Hubbard to South Point. Look for the Division's seal at the entrance and on each package, and check the store on its dispensary map.

  • Tax: a 10% excise tax plus the 5.25% state sales tax and local sales tax. Medical purchases are exempt from the excise.
  • Origin: legal possession now covers only cannabis from Ohio dispensaries or Ohio home grows. Cannabis bought in another state is illegal to carry into Ohio.
  • Cars and public use: open packages must ride in the trunk. Public smoking or vaping became a minor misdemeanor, and use is limited to private residential or agricultural property.
  • Delivery: not available for adult-use purchases. Medical home delivery is to be set up by Division rule.
  • Housing: adult-use consumers lost the Issue 2 protection against being refused as tenants for cannabis use; medical patients keep it.

Because Issue 2 was a statute, not a constitutional amendment, the legislature can change it again. A licence check matters even at reputable chains: batches can fail after passing, as in the Pure Ohio Wellness Gelato mold recall. The Ohio buying guide has the limits table.

Questions about this list

How many dispensaries can Ohio have?

Senate Bill 56, in force since March 20, 2026, caps the number of dispensary licences at 400. The Division of Cannabis Control listed 228 dispensaries with dual-use certificates on September 14, 2026.

Can I have cannabis delivered in Ohio?

Not for adult-use purchases; you buy in a store. Law-firm summaries of SB 56 say delivery is limited to medical patients, and the Division of Cannabis Control is to set up medical home delivery by rule.

Can I bring cannabis to Ohio from Michigan?

No. Since March 20, 2026 legal possession covers only cannabis bought from an Ohio dispensary or grown at home in Ohio, so cannabis from another state is illegal to possess.
