How it works

How cannabis is sold in Waterville

Coming off Interstate 95 at Waterville, the first stores are on Kennedy Memorial Drive, where Kennebec County's first adult-use shop opened on 9 December 2020.

  1. Take Kennedy Memorial Drive.
Sweet Dirt opened at number 475, the Central Maine papers reported, in a former furniture store. The register now lists High Value Cannabis at 475 and Waterville ECC at 465.
  2. Or go into town on College Avenue.
Astro Terf is at 84 and Stoner & Co. at 210. In July 2020 four marijuana facilities of all kinds sat on this avenue.
  3. Save Main Street and Industrial Street for later.
Cannabis Haven is at 341 Main and Theory Wellness at 20 Industrial.
  4. Know the tax before the register.
Visitors' rules and the sales tax are in the Maine visitor guide.

Is there a cap?

No. City Manager Michael Roy told the paper in July 2020 that council believes growth should be market-driven, and councillors turned down Mayor Nick Isgro's proposal to limit adult-use shop permits to three. By then the city clerk had collected $59,750 in permit fees from marijuana businesses, with packages of up to $12,000 for a single business. Ten facilities were operating in December 2020. Anything state-wide is under Maine.
