Why did Auburn drop its cap?
A January 2019 draft would have limited the city to five adult-use shops and five medical ones, with a $7,500 annual retail fee, the Sun Journal reported. By August 2019 the city had built an interactive map showing where buffers left room and was managing without a cap: 750 feet around schools, and 1,000 feet between retail stores in the downtown district. The retail fee had dropped to $5,000. Economic development deputy Eric Cousens told the Bangor Daily News the buffers would leave "about 20 stores spread all over the city".
The ordinance took effect on 1 July 2019, after Auburn had opted in when Maine's framework began on 13 December 2018. Seven listed stores is well short of that estimate. Rules for visitors are in the Maine visitor guide and statewide law is on the Maine page.
