How it works

How cannabis is sold in Augusta

Augusta rejected legal marijuana in the 2016 referendum, as Mayor Mark O'Brien reminded councillors, and the city did not allow adult-use stores until 2 August 2024.

What happened to the 15-shop cap?

Augusta had allowed medical retail since 2019, capped at 15 shops. Councillors voted 5-1 on 2 August 2024 to permit adult-use sales and to drop the cap, Central Maine reported, joining Manchester, Hallowell and Gardiner. Councillor Abigail St. Valle warned that a saturated market would get worse. The rules took effect 30 days later.

Who got the first two licences?

In October 2024 council approved Augusta Cannabis Co. and Origins Cannabis Co., the latter at 6 Orchard Street, without opposition. Origins is not on our register, a gap we cannot yet explain. What the register does list is a Western Avenue strip: Augusta Cannabis Co. at 393, Cannabis Haven at 265, Rugged Roots South at 378 and Theory Wellness at 152, with Farmacology on State Street.

Maine's wider market is covered in the dispensary and caregiver guide.

Cannabis in Augusta: questions

Did Augusta ban butane extraction?

No. Its planning board decided state licensing, building codes and city inspections adequately covered extraction using butane or propane.

How big is Maine's adult-use market?

Adult-use sales were $217 million in 2023 across 138 retailers, up from $159 million in 2022, Central Maine reported.
