How it works

How cannabis is sold in Bangor

Bangor's road to retail cannabis has four dates, and the second one is the argument that still shapes it.

  1. The city enacts a six-month ban on retail sales, a week before voters approve legalisation statewide.

  2. Council hears the police chief and health director warn about impaired driving and teen harm from social clubs, while a smoke-shop owner calls the fears unfounded.

  3. The state approves Firestorm Cultivation on Hammond Street, converted from medical to adult-use, as Bangor's first retail shop.

  4. Adult-use sales open across Maine to customers 21 and over.

What does the city allow, and where?

Medical and adult-use stores are permitted in some commercial districts, with setbacks from schools and churches, according to Bangor's code enforcement office. It also bans drive-through windows, outdoor displays and odours reaching other properties, and requires cameras. The rest of the register spreads out: Brothers on Stillwater Avenue, Brothers Cannabis on Broadway, Cannabis Cured at the Bangor Mall and Curaleaf on Hogan Road. Maine-wide law is summarised under Maine. The city's own FAQ names Chapters 165 and 177 of the Bangor code as the ones that apply.
