How cannabis is sold in Lewiston

Lewiston sets no cap on marijuana licences, so the size of the register says little about which shops are real, and the names carry the clues.

Read the whole name. The state lists Cannabis Haven Lewiston 1240 Lisbon St beside plain Cannabis Haven at 806 Sabattus Street. Two entries, two addresses.
Count brands, not rows. Harvest Cannabis Company appears twice, at 911 Lisbon and 1027 Sabattus, and Highly Cannaco at 790 Sabattus sits on the same street as Cannabis Haven.
Check the zone. The city says its Community Business zones allow retail but prohibit cultivation and manufacturing, so a grower with a Lewiston address is not a store.

How many licences does Lewiston hold?

In January 2022 the Sun Journal counted 27 active or pending retail licences, 29 for growing and 6 for manufacturing, and said Lewiston was tied with South Portland for fourth-most in Maine as of November 2021. A retail licence costs $5,000 a year, per the city. Our register lists eight stores, including Frosted Fire on Main Street and Humble Family Farms.

Why has the council not capped it?

The city says plainly there are no licence caps. In January 2022 the Planning Board asked council to consider a cap and residential buffers. Planning director David Hediger did not recommend one, arguing that performance standards already limit the number of businesses, and council was due to vote on 31 January 2022 on moving the school and childcare buffer from 750 to 1,000 feet and the home buffer from 300 to 100. We did not confirm the outcome, so check the current ordinance. Maine-level law is under Maine.
