About “dry mouth”

Dry mouth ties with "happy" as the most common tag on Verdex strain profiles: 69 of 74 published profiles list it as of late September 2026, from Jack Herer to OG Kush and even Charlotte's Web, a hemp cultivar under 1% THC. A tag that universal is a poor way to tell strains apart.

Cannabinoid receptors sit in salivary glands. Prestifilippo et al. (Experimental Biology and Medicine, 2006) found both CB1 and CB2 in rat submandibular glands and showed that activating them reduced saliva secretion. The American Dental Association says the dryness reportedly lasts one to six hours after use, and its dry-mouth page lists it as a commonly reported minor adverse effect of medical cannabis, alongside drowsiness, dizziness and nausea.

What the ADA suggests for dry mouth generally

  1. Sip water or sugarless drinks.
  2. Chew sugar-free gum or suck sugar-free candy.
  3. Avoid alcohol, including alcohol-based mouthrinses, plus tobacco and caffeine.

It matters beyond comfort. The ADA says regular cannabis users have significantly more cavities than non-users, and that dry mouth can contribute to a number of oral conditions. That is worth mentioning at the next dental visit, especially alongside the munchies. Outside a session, the ADA names medication as the most frequent cause of dry mouth, so dryness that never lifts is a question for a dentist or doctor.
