About “anxious”
Nobody plans the moment when a pleasant buzz becomes a pounding heart. Dose is the best-documented lever. In Childs, Lutz and de Wit (Drug and Alcohol Dependence, 2017), 42 volunteers took 0, 7.5 or 12.5 mg of oral THC before a mock job-interview stress test. The 7.5 mg group reported less stress after the task, while the 12.5 mg group reported small but significant increases in anxiety and negative mood.
NIDA adds that anxiety, fear and paranoia are more common when a person takes a large amount, when the product has a high THC level, or when the person is inexperienced.
What shifts the odds
- Waiting. Per Health Canada, eaten cannabis takes 30 minutes to 2 hours to start working, while inhaled effects arrive within seconds to minutes.
- Terpenes, weakly. In a small 2024 trial (Spindle et al.) inhaled limonene lowered anxious and paranoid ratings after THC. The sample was 20 people.
- Strain names, little. 43 of the 74 published profiles list anxiety, CBD-dominant Harlequin and ACDC included, as do Jack Herer and Durban Poison.
When it is more than a bad hour
Health Canada lists chest pain with a rapid heartbeat, severe anxiety or a panic attack, and loss of contact with reality as reasons to seek immediate medical attention or call a poison center: 1-800-222-1222 in the US, 1-844-POISON-X across Canada. The NHS says most panic attacks last 5 to 20 minutes and advises seeing a GP if they keep recurring. If anxiety keeps coming back around regular use, the cannabis use disorder guide covers where to get help.
