About Sour Diesel
The Sour Diesel strain is the East Coast's signature contribution to modern cannabis: a sharp, fuel-scented sativa-leaning hybrid that came out of New York's underground in the 1990s. Is Sour Diesel indica or sativa? It is a hybrid with a clear sativa lean. AllBud and DNA Genetics describe it as roughly 90% sativa and CannaConnection as 70%, while Leafly files it as a hybrid with energizing effects.
The smell is the headline. Leafly reviewers rate diesel, chemical, skunky and pungent notes far above anything else, and the fuel character is shared with its Chemdawg parent and with OG Kush, which is often traced to the same family. Leafly's lab data lists beta-caryophyllene, myrcene and limonene as the main terpenes; caryophyllene brings a peppery bite, limonene a sour-citrus edge, and myrcene the earthy base, while AllBud's reviewers also pick up a candy-like sweetness.
Sour Diesel effects arrive quickly and sit mostly in the head. Leafly's user data leads with energetic, uplifted, talkative and creative, with happy and focused close behind, and people commonly report using it during the day for low mood, stress and fatigue. Leafly's review summary also notes that high doses can tip into paranoia or anxiety, and both appear in its side-effect data after dry mouth and dry eyes. Potency figures cluster around 19–22% THC (Leafly, CannaConnection, DNA Genetics); AllBud's 26% is an outlier worth treating with caution.
Compared with its Chemdawg parent, Sour Diesel is lighter in the body and more talkative in Leafly's data; compared with Headband, its cross with OG Kush, it is more energetic. It is a tall, stretchy plant that needs around ten to eleven weeks to finish, so it asks for patience and headroom. Growers mostly worry about bud rot: DNA Genetics recommends keeping humidity down late in flower.
Origin & history
Sour Diesel's origin is one of cannabis folklore's open questions. High Times' history of Chemdog reports that in late 1994 a New York grower known as AJ gave the name "Diesel" to a chance cross between Chem 91 and an unidentified hermaphrodite plant; friends in Albany added "The Sour", and it spread as AJ's Sour Diesel and East Coast Sour Diesel. Leafly and Wikipedia list the parents as Chemdawg and Super Skunk, and other accounts name a DNL or Mass Super Skunk parent instead. Leafly dates its first wave of popularity to the early 1990s.
