About “paranoid”

In a 2015 randomized study (Freeman et al., Schizophrenia Bulletin), 121 people with a tendency to paranoid thoughts received THC intravenously or placebo. THC raised paranoia, and the rise was fully accounted for by increases in negative feelings such as anxiety and worry and by unusual experiences. In that study, paranoia was the end of a chain, not an isolated switch, and the participants were selected for the trait, so it speaks most directly to anyone who recognizes it in themselves.

What can be done early?

The mechanism suggests watching the earlier links. Rising worry, low mood or perceptions that feel strange are the moment to stop adding more and stay somewhere familiar. Health Canada lists psychotic episodes involving paranoia, delusions and hallucinations among the short-term effects of cannabis.

Does CBD protect?

A 2013 trial with a swallowed 600 mg CBD dose pointed that way, but a 2023 trial with inhaled cannabis found no protection at ratios up to 3:1. The calm page lays the studies side by side, and CBD vs THC covers the labels.

Which strains mention it?

Seventeen of the 74 profiles published in September 2026 mention paranoia, among them White Widow, Haze and Sour Diesel. One lists it only "at high doses". These are consumer reports, and strain names do not reliably predict effects.

When to get help

Health Canada advises immediate medical attention or a call to the local poison center for a psychotic episode, meaning loss of contact with reality. Symptoms that continue after the high wears off deserve a clinician too.
