About Blueberry
The Blueberry strain is the reason "blue" became a flavor category in cannabis. Bred by American breeder DJ Short and released in seed form by Dutch Passion in 1998, it won the High Times Cannabis Cup two years later and went on to parent Blue Dream and many other crosses. Is Blueberry indica or sativa? It is an indica-leaning hybrid — Dutch Passion lists about 80% indica, mostly Afghani, with Thai and a little Oaxacan sativa behind it.
The aroma really does resemble fresh blueberries. Leafly reviewers put blueberry and berry far ahead of every other descriptor, followed by sweet and floral notes, and AllBud mentions vanilla on the palate. Leafly's lab data shows myrcene as the dominant terpene, followed by beta-caryophyllene and pinene, with some ocimene. Myrcene provides the soft, ripe base, while pinene and caryophyllene add a fresh, lightly peppery edge that keeps the sweetness in check.
Blueberry effects are relaxing without being purely sedative. Leafly users most often report sleepy and relaxed, followed by happy, hungry, tingly and euphoric, and Dutch Passion describes the high as clear and euphoric rather than crushing, thanks to the sativa share. People commonly mention using it for sleep, everyday aches, stress and muscle tension. Side effects are mild in Leafly's data — mainly dry mouth and dry eyes — with low anxiety and paranoia scores. THC figures range from about 16% to 24% depending on the source, with Leafly's lab median at 17% and Dutch Passion citing around 20%.
Compared with Blue Dream, its best-known child, Blueberry is heavier and sleepier; compared with Granddaddy Purple, it smells more of blueberry than grape and draws fewer "sleepy" reports. Dutch Passion is honest that it is not the easiest plant for newcomers: it can be a fussy feeder, likes a stable environment and yields a moderate 350–450 g/m² in 8–9 weeks. Cool air late in flowering can bring out the blue and purple coloring growers prize.
Origin & history
Blueberry began with DJ Short, an American breeder who in the 1970s worked with landraces collected by growers in Oregon and California. According to Soft Secrets, his Blue family drew on Highland Oaxaca Gold, Highland Thai ("Juicy Fruit"), Chocolate Thai and an Afghan indica; Oaxaca and Chocolate Thai produced Purple Thai, and the Thai lines were crossed with Afghan pollen. Dutch Passion introduced Blueberry to the Dutch market in 1998 alongside other Blue family strains, and a Blueberry entry won the 2000 High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam.
