About Jack Herer

The Jack Herer strain carries the name of the American campaigner who wrote The Emperor Wears No Clothes, and it has become one of the best-known daytime cultivars anywhere. Is Jack Herer indica or sativa? It is a hybrid that most people experience as sativa-leaning. Sensi Seeds, which bred it, lists a 50/50 split, Leafly describes it as about 55% sativa and AllBud goes as high as 80%. The spread comes from phenotypes: Sensi says three of its four main types lean sativa while the fourth grows like an indica.

The aroma is a textbook terpinolene profile. Leafly's lab data ranks terpinolene well ahead of beta-caryophyllene and pinene, which explains why reviewers reach for pine, wood and pepper, and why AllBud likens the smell to a pine-scented household cleaner with lemon over the top. Terpinolene supplies the sharp, fresh, slightly herbal top note; caryophyllene adds the peppery warmth underneath. People who enjoy Durban Poison or Super Lemon Haze tend to recognize the family resemblance, since both are also terpinolene-led in Leafly's data.

Jack Herer effects are the reason it keeps selling. In Leafly's user-reported data, focused, energetic, creative and uplifted all score strongly, with happy and talkative close behind. That makes it a frequent pick for work sessions, errands and creative projects rather than for the couch. Anxiety is the second most common complaint in Leafly's data after dry mouth, so people prone to racy highs usually start with a small amount. THC typically lands around 15–24%, and Sensi notes it can pass 20%.

Jack Herer also has an institutional footnote few coffeeshop classics share: Sensi Seeds and Leafly both report that it was distributed through Dutch pharmacies as a medical-grade strain. For growers it is not a beginner's plant. Sensi describes tall, vigorous plants that reward experience, while CannaConnection gives 8–10 weeks of flowering and indoor yields of about 500–600 g/m². Selecting a mother plant from a few seeds is common practice because phenotypes differ so much.

Origin & history

Sensi Seeds bred Jack Herer in the Netherlands in the mid-1990s and named it after Jack Herer, the American activist whose book on hemp became a touchstone of the legalization movement. The breeder paired a Haze hybrid with a cross of Northern Lights #5 and Shiva Skunk, the idea being to keep Haze's cerebral character while raising resin output. Sensi's entry won the overall High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam in 1994. The company has since said that its proudest moment with the strain was not a trophy but its approval as a medicinal cultivar by Dutch authorities.
