The rules

Key rules in Canada

Plain-language summary. The regulator is Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC).

  • Minimum age

18 in Alberta, 21 in Quebec, 19 in all other provinces and territories.

  • Possession

    30 g of dried cannabis or equivalent in public (1 g dried = 5 g fresh, 15 g edible solids, 70 g non-solid products, 570 g beverages, 0.25 g concentrates or 1 seed). Some provinces cap home storage, e.g. 150 g per residence in Quebec and 1,000 g per household in B.C.

  • Home grow

Up to 4 plants per residence under federal law. Prohibited in Quebec. Manitoba passed Bill 34 in June 2024 and home growing became legal there on May 1, 2025 (19+, up to 4 plants per household, grown indoors; gov.mb.ca).

  • Public use

Set provincially: generally allowed where tobacco smoking is in Ontario and B.C. (with exceptions); smoking and vaping banned in all public spaces in Quebec; no public consumption in New Brunswick; private dwellings only in PEI; restricted in Alberta and Nova Scotia; not in vehicles.

  • Edibles and extracts

Max 10 mg THC per edible package; extracts max 10 mg per unit and 1,000 mg per package; topicals max 1,000 mg per package. Quebec bans edibles in the form of candy, desserts or chocolate.

  • Buying online

Only from provincially run or authorized retailers, delivered within that province.

  • Travel

Taking cannabis into or out of Canada is illegal, with penalties of up to 14 years in prison.

How it works

How cannabis is sold in Calgary

Calgary copied its liquor rules for cannabis, and the store map shows it.

Why is there rarely a second store on the same block?

When council passed the bylaw in 2018, stores had to sit 300 metres apart and 150 metres from schools, the same distances liquor stores face, according to Global News. The City of Calgary adds that a cannabis store must be its own business, so no counter inside a convenience shop, and in most districts it cannot sit beside a liquor store. Verdex lists 191 Calgary stores, every one matched to the AGLC register, 13 with full profiles. Spacing spreads them thin: expect one near you, not five.

Which quadrant has which store?

In the northwest, Bud Bar Crowfoot on Crowfoot Crescent is the chain's busiest-reviewed store, 4.9 from 584 Google reviews, and a Canna Cabana on Crowchild Trail NW faces the University of Calgary. South and west, the register lists RARE Cannabis Co. on Richmond Road SW, Oakridge Cannabis on Oakfield Drive SW and Lake City Cannabis by Mount Royal University. The inner north-east has FivePoint Cannabis in Bridgeland, and All The Smoke covers Thorncliffe on Centre Street N. Bow Cannabis holds Bowness Road NW.

Does delivery reach my postcode?

With this many licences, distance rarely decides the choice, delivery does. RARE, Lake City and Bow Cannabis list Calgary delivery in their profiles; RARE and Lake City also ship across Alberta. Read the delivery line for your postal code before you order, and see the delivery rules by province.

Where can I use it once I have it?

Not at city facilities: Calgary runs a zero-alcohol, zero-cannabis policy there, and the provincial act keeps use out of bar patios, bus shelters, sports fields and playgrounds. For Alberta's age and tax rules, use the Alberta hub.

Cannabis in Calgary: questions

Can a Calgary store share a wall with a liquor store?

In most districts the City of Calgary bars it. Cannabis stores must also be standalone businesses, so a cannabis counter inside a convenience or liquor shop is not permitted.

Are all 191 listed Calgary stores licensed?

Verdex matched every one to the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission register. Only 13 have full profiles so far, so the rest show licence and address data only.
