  • Minimum age

18 in Alberta, 21 in Quebec, 19 in all other provinces and territories.

  • Possession

    30 g of dried cannabis or equivalent in public (1 g dried = 5 g fresh, 15 g edible solids, 70 g non-solid products, 570 g beverages, 0.25 g concentrates or 1 seed). Some provinces cap home storage, e.g. 150 g per residence in Quebec and 1,000 g per household in B.C.

  • Home grow

Up to 4 plants per residence under federal law. Prohibited in Quebec. Manitoba passed Bill 34 in June 2024 and home growing became legal there on May 1, 2025 (19+, up to 4 plants per household, grown indoors; gov.mb.ca).

  • Public use

How it works

How cannabis is sold in Grande Prairie

Grande Prairie's cannabis market began with a lottery, not a shop.

  1. City council caps licences at 15 for the first year; intake opens for three weeks at a $2,500 fee, with licences drawn by lottery, according to Everything GP.

  2. Federal legalization day. Stores could not yet open.

  3. Lucky Leaf, at 100 Street and 97 Avenue, is the first store to open, per My Grande Prairie Now.

  4. the Verdex register shows 21 licensed stores, so the first-year cap is long gone.

Where the chains and independents sit

Canna Cabana runs 10831 100 Street, 115-11070 100 Avenue and 370-11801 100 Street. Cannabis 4 Less has Resources Road, 108A Street and a 110 Avenue shop downtown. Independents such as Abraham's Cannabis and Frosted Acres sit close enough to the chains that comparing one product across three doors costs an hour.

Downtown is a no-use zone

The City's cannabis page bans consumption in the downtown block from 100 to 101 Avenue and 98 to 102 Street, and within 30 metres of parks, recreation facilities, children's play areas and cinema entrances. Tickets run up to $250. With no review scores yet, treat the register as a floor and use the licence-check guide if a sign and the AGLC list disagree.
