  • Minimum age

18 in Alberta, 21 in Quebec, 19 in all other provinces and territories.

  • Possession

    30 g of dried cannabis or equivalent in public (1 g dried = 5 g fresh, 15 g edible solids, 70 g non-solid products, 570 g beverages, 0.25 g concentrates or 1 seed). Some provinces cap home storage, e.g. 150 g per residence in Quebec and 1,000 g per household in B.C.

  • Home grow

Up to 4 plants per residence under federal law. Prohibited in Quebec. Manitoba passed Bill 34 in June 2024 and home growing became legal there on May 1, 2025 (19+, up to 4 plants per household, grown indoors; gov.mb.ca).

  • Public use

Set provincially: generally allowed where tobacco smoking is in Ontario and B.C. (with exceptions); smoking and vaping banned in all public spaces in Quebec; no public consumption in New Brunswick; private dwellings only in PEI; restricted in Alberta and Nova Scotia; not in vehicles.

  • Edibles and extracts

How it works

How cannabis is sold in Edmonton

An Edmonton development officer can shrink the gap between two cannabis stores by 20 metres at most, so the floor is 180.

Why do Edmonton stores keep their distance?

Under the City zoning bylaw a cannabis store must be at least 200 metres from any other one and 200 metres from a school or public library, with 100 metres from parks, recreation centres and provincial health facilities. That is stricter than most Alberta cities, and it is why neighbouring shops are rarely on the same block. Verdex lists 175 Edmonton stores from the AGLC register, 11 with full profiles.

Which two avenues do people mean?

Jasper Avenue and 118 Avenue carry the names searchers use. On Jasper, Cannabis Discounter at 11452 is open to 2 AM Thursday to Saturday, and The Cannabis Cellar is a small basement shop run by the family behind Glenora Cannabis. On 118 Avenue, Select Cannabis in Alberta Avenue has one of the city's biggest review records, 4.9 from 377 Google reviews, and Elevate is the west-end option.

Elsewhere, Crown Cannabis in Ritchie is one of an eight-store Edmonton chain known for low prices, Hollybud on 184 Street and Cannabis Cellar Callingwood on 177 Street serve the west, and Fire & Flower covers Jackson Heights. Province-wide rules are on the Alberta hub.

Cannabis in Edmonton: questions

How far apart must Edmonton cannabis stores be?

At least 200 metres under the City zoning bylaw, and a development officer cannot relax that by more than 20 metres. Schools and public libraries also need a 200-metre buffer.

Is Sherwood Park's rule the same as Edmonton's?

No. Strathcona County, which contains Sherwood Park, uses a 100-metre setback from schools and health facilities. See the Sherwood Park page for its zoning.
